Andy Caldwell @ Nocturnal Review

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

These thought provoking words spoken by American writer Henry David Thoreau, epitomizes the Aquabooty brand of parties in Miami.

This past weekend, Aquabooty showcased its musically diverse approach by inviting Miami based “Suenalo Sound System” (live band), and San Francisco’s own Andy Caldwell!

DHM played a short set this week, a cornucopia of vocals infused with some deep basslines was their main course.

With their instruments finally set up upon a stage in front of the VIP area, Suenalo Sound System began their live show at midnight. A percussionist, trombonist, saxophonist, two guitarists, keyboard player and vocalist comprised the band.

Playing for close to two hours, their music was mostly comprised of funky, reggae style songs much like one would hear as if on a vacation on the Bahamas. The one noticeable difference though was the vocalist. During their uplifting performance, he would rap along to the beats.

As with any live band, technical problems can and do arise. Unfortunately tonight was no exception. Apparently the microphone was not working properly. In order to remedy the situation, the band took a 15 min break. DHM once again took to the decks as the glitch was resolved.

Upon their return, Suenalo Sound System began to play the sounds of Spain. Latin music with a mix of jazzy riffs echoed throughout. The crowd reacted appropriately as those attending with their significant others began to dance salsa! A sight I thought I would never see at an Aquabooty event.

As their live performance neared its conclusion, the trombonist switched out his instrument and began to proficiently play a seashell of all things!

Around 1:45 am, DHM approached the decks once more as Andy Caldwell’s flight had been delayed. Never to fear though, for Andy Caldwell arrived fifteen minutes later!

Originally from the San Francisco Bay area, Andy Caldwell has always had an enormous passion for the art of music. At an early age, Andy took trumpet and piano lessons. These were the initial seeds that sparked his interest in the music scene.

Caldwell’s career began in the winter of 1992. Quickly becoming a producer, Andy has released more than 30 records, several albums and a plethora of mix compilations. Caldwell’s first track “Superfunkidiculous” released in 1994, became an instant club hit eventually leading him to collaborate with friend Gabriel Rene and form the band “Soulstice.”

Concurrently, Caldwell also created a stream of his own releases under the OM record label, as well as releases featured on Mark Farina’s Mushroom Jazz series. His singles were also included on six consecutive OM Lounge compilations and two full length mix CD’s entitled Sounds of OM v. 2. Other chart topping singles for Andy include his Naked Music release “All I Need,” and “Don’t Hold Back.”

Andy Caldwell’s productions have also been recognized in the film and television industry. For example, he has composed music for films such as Skulls, as well as the television series: Six Feet Under and Boston Public.

In stark contrast to Miguel Migs’ highly energetic set a few weeks back, Andy Caldwell took it deep for “those who like house!”

Starting off with some quirky electro, he quickly progressed to a multitude of vocals.
From DJ Colette’s “What Will She Do For Love” (Andy Caldwell Electric Mix-OM), to Lisha Project’s “Feel,” (Salted), if smooth female vocals were your “cup of tea,” then one’s thirst was truly quenched!

Though the rooftop was only about half full, Andy Caldwell continued on course. Delving into some deep and jazzy grooves by 3 a.m. his set was oftentimes relaxing…yet still very enjoyable.

At the culmination of his two and a half hour set, Andy momentarily stopped the music, than started up again with a bit of classic funk. As Rick James’ “Give It To Me Baby,” echoed throughout the patio.

Perhaps it is that very difference that keeps the regulars returning on a weekly basis and new faces cropping up. The only problem though is that with five years of parties under their belts, the Aquabooty crew may soon need to get larger pants! For as long as there are people that will come out and dance, house music will continue to flow like “fine wine” upon Nocturnal’s rooftop!
