Thanksgiving behind us, and our stomachs stuffed with all that makes this a holiday for which to be truly thankful, there was, indeed, no better time to savor some quality house music out on the town.
My first stop was at the Chesterfield Hotel on Collins Avenue where the “Sunset Sessions” party was in full effect.
Entering the Chesterfield lobby, I was immediately treated to the Progressive House sounds of resident DJ James Stratus.
The lobby, already decorated for the upcoming holidays, displayed vibrant blue spheres hanging from the ceiling and a Christmas tree beside the bar. The room, with comfortable white sofas throughout, easily accommodated those present.
We were treated to sets by three up-and-coming local DJ’s…James Stratus, Alan Stenback and Soozin. Assisting them on their musical journey, were two Technic tables and a Gemini mixer coupled with JBL speakers.
The journey tonight began with some deep progressive house courtesy of James Stratus. Next to take the decks was Alan Stenback.
Alan, who has played on such local internet shows such as the “Womb” delivered a delicious set that ranged from smooth and sexy house to jazzy house. From Dubtribe’s “Nothing Is Impossible” to Miguel Migs’ “Feel It”, he had those in attendance with smiles ingrained upon their faces.
I would have enjoyed staying to listen to Soozin when she took over at 11 pm but my party and I were on our way to the Pawn Shop.
It was time for Aquabooty’s 4 year anniversary and we were not about to miss DJ Harvey! After a slight detour trying to locate my car, we finally arrived at the Pawn Shop around 11:30 pm.
The Pawn Shop is truly a gem of a place. Upon entering, one can immediately sense its nostalgia. The first thing that one notices is the school bus separating the dance floor from the lounge/bar area. The bus amazingly was used for the VIP area. At the entryway, red antique couches greeted visitors.
A large chandelier… with boxing gloves hanging from it was also prominent. And the bar sported a tabletop containing the remnants of the actual pawn shop that was previously resident to this popular spot.
Once one passes the school bus, you enter a well sized dance floor, with another bar along the back wall. For those wishing to take a breather from all the dancing…the perimeter of the establishment was just the place.
The back wall was filled with comfortable and spacious airplane seats. It also sported a pinball machine, and near the dance floor itself, a bunk bed with a “Transformers” comforter along with a giant-sized “Barney” the dinosaur stuffed animal!
It was as if the very uniqueness of the venue contributed to the eclectic and exuberant crowd were already experiencing the very special event within.
Aquabooty has built a strong and growing following of supporters over their past four years in Miami. Joe Budious and Tomas have done a remarkable job bringing in such talents as Miguel Migs, Marques Wyatt and the guest for this evening DJ Harvey.
Prior to Harvey’s set, DHM (Aquabooty’s resident DJ’s ) took the decks. One could only describe their set as just good old fashioned “banging house.” Around 1:30 am Harvey took the decks. At this point the venue was slammed full of people.
The vibe was electrifying. Everywhere one looked one could see happy patrons dancing, very few were just standing around. Harvey’s set was more along the lines of a classic house set. He even dropped an old school Prince track for good measure.
Though there was a technical problem in the middle of the set, the crowd continued to chant and sing and have a great time. Aquabooty’s fans are loyal and are indeed true house aficionados.
Aquabooty once again brought this city another fantastic party, something that they have become quite proficient at doing.
As I departed the venue with my lovely companion, I was asked by the doorman how I enjoyed myself at their establishment.
It is little things like that, that make this venue a special and unique place and one that should be visited by all those looking for a change of pace from the normal hotspots.
