Amika has already proven that they are a club not only dedicated to providing a more upscale sophisticated enviroment but that they have a commitment to offer quality music.
It was no surprise that Baltimore’s DJ Charles Feelgood was one the first guest DJ’s for Amika.
Feelgood has built a solid reputation for being both technical versatile. Three times I have heard him in Miami (at I/O Lounge, Nerve and Crobar) and each set has been uniquely different.
Ranging from the deep to Techno, he has proven that he can intertwine styles and sort of “drag you in” from one type of dance music to the next. Needless to say, I was very anxious to listen to him at a completely different setting.
The door at Amika was jammed, it seems that this Friday party is the one to be at. According to Amika’s music policy, Shawn Rudnicks’ set was on target, never skipping a beat and a tasty selection of tracks in well thought out order.
Shawn is never too banging and always on cue. To compliment Shawn and Charles, the percussionists add that Latin South Florida feel that is so fitting in our city.
Once Charles started his set, it was evident his set would be slightly different than previous Miami sets (closely resembling his set at I/O Lounge in style).
Immediately the set started with some funky house with a bit of thump. Although I think he took off a little hard, slightly more banging than Shawn, it did spark a good reaction from revelers.
It also worked for allowing the dancers to get a little more crazy on the podiums. I always like clubs that feature dancers in whatever style… sexy, crazy, robotic, etc. it adds loads of ambiance.
Mr. Feelgood started to wonder off a bit (almost dabbling) in a proggy tune followed by a re-mix of Tears for Fears “Shout” and just as I thought we lost him he re-introduced more funky house and dropped an Ibiza summer banger: Olav Basoskis’ “Waterman”.
The set was filled with bangers and shakers and some unheard of gems. As far as technical ability, he did a wonderful job and the mixing was very nice. Not a lot of turntable wizardry but still the set was nice and fun and certainly made for a great compliment for Amika’s décor and fun upscale crowd.
I hope that Amika’s music policy will continue as such bringing acts that will help to add to our South Florida reputation as a mecca of dance music and DJ’s interested in spinning here.
Charles Feelgood seems to be visiting more often and I think he has found a club that can very much match his style and has a music oriented crowd that will welcome his sets.
It was a truly fun night and quite packed until the end. The entire night was nicely executed on behalf all the entertainers of the evening.
