On Friday May 14 2004, Heineken Music along with United and Cubitek presented Closer with Stryke and Austin Leeds at Glow in Santurce.
The first of a series of monthly events put together by Heineken, United and Cubitek had an amazing talent roster, even though the venue was not packed like it should have been.
These series of events are really interesting and have a really good potential of greater acceptance of the crowd, especially when Glow is a really good venue for hosting them. I'm pretty sure that for the next event, the venue will be packed.
I arrived at Glow at about midnight, only to find that I wasn't on the list like I thought I should. Anyways, after identifying myself as part of the Cooljunkie crew, I had no problem getting in.
When I stepped inside, Austin Leeds was already on the decks and playing some really interesting progressive music.
At first, the dancefloor was totally empty but when Austin played a dark progressive vocal song with lyrics... "I'm just stoned in my head", he broke the ice and made a few step into the dancefloor.
After a while, a couple of people joined in, and the vibe started to create. Tracks like "Turn on the Music" and "Ride" made everyone go crazy.
It is funny to mention that when Austin was playing a track called "Tear it up", a Redbull cooler sitting on stage got tipped over and all the ice spilled around his feet. Since I was the lucky one to be on backstage at the moment, I willingly volunteered to clean up the mess before somebody slipped and really tore everything up!!
At almost 2:00 a.m., Stryke made his way through the slippery stage and got on the decks. By that time, the dancefloor was filled with energy and received Stryke with a warm welcome.
He didn't let anyone down, since as soon as he started playing his acclaimed techno, he caught everyone's attention with a live remix of Murk's "Dark Beat", which was last year's favorite tune. He also remixed live Chemical Brother's "Get yourself high".
Using Final Scratch technology, a laptop computer and a Pioneer effector, Stryke was producing live remixes during his set.
This is proof that he is certainly one of the best and most versatile deejays around. I didn't have the chance to catch Stryke's whole set, but I'm pretty sure that it definitely was great and that everyone was going crazy to it.
