America’s finest house and techno record label, dirtybird Records, will be sending two of their best down to Miami this weekend for what’s set to be a night of nothing but quality sound.
This weekend Future Mob, Creations, Musical Missionary and CoolJunkie.com present Christian Martin and Worthy, who will star in one of the best events that Memorial Day Weekend has to offer in Miami.
Releasing their first record at the start 2005, dirtybird Records came about through a collaborative effort between Barclay Crenshaw, a.k.a. Claude VonStroke, and Christian Martin. The label derived from Martin’s outdoor parties in San Francisco called “dirtybird.” Barclay then created the logo from sketches he’d produced since he was 10-years-old.
“We always have kept our music tuned to the dance floor,” he says. “When we started the dirtybird party at Golden Gate Park our whole goal was to get people off their asses on a Sunday and dance. It was kind of like a constant battle. We start off our afternoons in the park with slower BPM’s…and then it will progressively turn into faster BPM’s. By the end it’s a gradual journey of five hours.”
It was from those parties that the dirtybird label spawned, creating a unique and distinct sound and bringing more attention to the electronic scene in the U.S.
“The dirtybird sound has definitely come out of Bay area hip-hop,” says Christian Martin. “You can even say commercial hip-hop in general because we use so many 808’s. It really sticks out on a lot of big systems. We don’t try to clutter up our sound with a lot of unnecessary stuff.”
Saturday’s event at the Vagabond brings Martin and Worthy back to Miami since their last appearance during their Winter Music Conference event at Studio A for the Earlybird Afterhours party.
“I can’t wait, I love playing on Funktion Ones,” Martin says about the Vagabond’s set-up. “Anytime I get a chance to play on a big sound system I always bring some special stuff.”
Since most locals stray away from the cluster-fuck that is South Beach during Memorial weekend, this provides a great excuse to escape and indulge in some excellent music. Although this weekend is known for it’s hip-hop antics, even if you’re not the biggest fan of house music, Martin’s technique is set to change some perceptions.
“I like to trick people that think they don’t like house music and play them some stuff that will definitely blow their mind,” he says. “I like it to be unclassifiable, but if people are dancing then we’re doing our job correctly.”
