When it comes to clubbing there are few things as iconic as the sunrise. It’s a badge of pride, when the sunglasses you have been wearing indoors all night suddenly become practical. There are many who will never feel the sunshine warming their face while a heavy bassline moves their feet. But anyone who has done after-hours on the Space Terrace knows this feeling time and time again, and who better to immortalize the experience than Nervous Records’ founder Mike Weiss and iconic Space resident Oscar G. This Sunday, Nervous Records will be filming a DVD featuring Oscar G, which will also be accompanied by the audio soundtrack to the DVD and ten original Oscar G. tracks. Weiss’ decision to team up with Oscar G. is no surprise.
“Oscar is just a great guy … we’re good friends,” says Nervous Records founder Michael Weiss. “Oscar and Ralph Falcon single-handedly brought the spotlight to Miami.”
“We felt doing an afterhours shoot on the Terrace would add a different twist to it,” he adds. “We’re gonna’ shoot while the sun is coming up. This is something you often see in video clips from iconic club spots like Ibiza, or Majorca…but I don’t know if anyone has done this in Miami.”
He could have filmed it in New York, but he explains, “The Space Miami crowd is a good looking crowd…lot of sexy women, which can help sell a DVD!” It’s good to know that all of those exposed midriffs on the Terrace Sunday mornings haven’t gone unnoticed. Nervous Records have been around for nearly two decades and even though the dance music spotlight has shifted from New York City to other places they are still putting out legendary tracks, even during some of the toughest times for the music industry.
“When I started in 1991 it felt like New York was the center of the universe,” he says. “Ministry of Sound flew me over for a Nervous party during their first year of operation. I got to the club and when you first walked in, you saw these four massive flags over the dance floor. They had the Nervous logo, the Strictly Rhythm logo, the Nugroove Logo and the Maxi logo. Those were all New York labels.”
It’s great to see someone from New York teaming up with someone from Miami. Maybe the clubbers in New York can learn a thing or two about what put Miami on the map and maybe we could learn a thing or two about how we got where we are today. Even though the focus might have shifted from the States to the global clubbing circuit, this DVD might help to raise the profile for America’s once renowned urban centers. As someone who has been seriously involved with dance music since it’s rise to the popular consciousness, Weiss did not expect the shift that has occurred recently.
“Look at what we have now…hot tracks coming from Canada and Netherlands and Eastern Europe?” he says. “That is something I would have never predicted back then for the house scene.”
