There is now a little taste of Hollywood in the desert – Key Club, a landmark in Hollywood’s music and nightlife scene, kicked off the grand opening of its newest venue: Key Club Morongo at the Morongo Casino, Resort and Spa on over the weekend. With a guest performance by Duran Duran and DJ set by DJ AM, Key Club definitely tried to bring the Sunset Strip’s glamour and reputation to a whole new audience.
“We are very excited to welcome the venue that was most recently voted ‘No. 1 Best Live Music Venue,' by AOL and has been named ‘Club of the Year' by the L.A. Times and Details Magazine. This will provide our customers a full spectrum of high caliber entertainment,” said Morongo Casino, Resort & Spa general manager Bill Davis.
One of the qualities that attracted Key Club to this venue is the 18-million people within a 90-mile radius as well as the venue’s close proximity to Los Angeles. The venue is definitely impressive with a great sound system and a sleek looking three-level layout, complete with multiple bars, complex light shows, and flat screen TVs.
The venue was packed as Duran Duran excited the crowd with their myriad of hits and great stage presence. But the crowds dwindled after Duran Duran’s encore.
The draw was an interesting mix of all age groups and musical interests, decidedly different from the Hollywood crowd that frequents the Key Club’s LA counterpart. DJ AM, unquestionably one of the most well-known celebrity DJs, didn’t receive his usual degree of fanfare, and his presence seemed to be lost amongst most of the patrons.
While everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, the vibe from the crowd was different – not better, not worse, but Key Club definitely has an interesting dynamic to work with and diverse musical tastes to please in this new venue. The question for the future is how will they do it – how will they mix what works in Hollywood with the demands of the Morongo audience?
