Picture this. On a chilly and dark Tuesday night you’re at home. Bored. It’s still quite a ways away from the weekend and you start to get the itch that usually comes at the end of the workday on Thursday. You think, “Is this possible?” Yes…yes it is. Luckily you live in Miami and there’s always something to do in this city. But in a town that’s primarily dominated by the electronic sounds of the DJ and the bass and tremble of commercial hip hop; it’s hard to find that medium.
For those who enjoy good rock, a chill atmosphere and a good deal at the bar, you might find yourselves driving as far as Churchill’s on nights like these. But lucky for everyone, the start of a new Tuesday night at Bella Rose might fill this void and provide just what you need. Psychic Tuesdays, a night organized by Psychic Youth Inc., is set to step up to the challenge, and maybe even take back the beach.
“We decided it was time to put together a night where we showcase the music we feel is important,” says Sweat Records co-owner, Lauren ‘Lolo’ Reskin, who’s also a part of Psychic Youth Inc. “We’ve been organizing shows in different disciplines sporadically around the city and want to make this energy available to anyone who enjoys it on a weekly basis.”
Upon entering Psychic Tuesdays, you get the sense that this isn’t your run of the mill event. There’s something different in the air; a sense of intimacy that’s mainly provided by the dimly lit bar or the energy coming out of the speakers, primarily in the form of rare B-sides and hard to find dancy punk singles provided by DJ Healer (aka artist Federico Nessi) and DJ R3K+, who can also be heard at the Nightdrive party Wednesdays at News Lounge. This night may definitely be one of a kind, definitely at the beach.
“There is no restrictions to the music,” says the Psychic Youth Inc. collective. “The flow of the night will be determined by the psychic connection we share with our guests. As of week three we will showcase a different guest DJ every week that’ll determine the mood of the night. Most of the music being played will probably fall under a dark/punk umbrella, however.”
There isn’t a specific crowd that Psychic Youth Inc. is shooting for, just merely providing everyone a cool alternative in a location where everyone seems to follow the same trail. Although it’s exciting to join in on the big club fun that many of the great venues in this city have to offer, there’s always room for a curveball that’ll freshen things up.
“We’re not trying to win people over,” the Psychic Youth Inc. collective say. “Even though there is an open bar every week.”
