CoolJunkie Gadget Update: Skype Videophone - ASUS AiGuru S1
November 17, 2008 5:08 PM
by Marcos Colón

Ok, so as we all can see, technology just keeps surprising all of us day by day as the things that we all saw in the Back to The Future movies just keep poppin’ up left and right. In 1999 the infamous webcam was developed and a few years later became mass produced, keeping families in touch, long-distance relationships in tact and adding yet another tool to the Pervert Tech List. Now, you no longer need a computer in order to see a friend or relative who’s a plane flight away. Skype has finally developed and released their first certified videophone, the ASUS AiGuru SV1.

With the Skype videophone can be used for both video and voice calls that are Skype-to-Skype for no charge. It’s also possible to call landlines and mobile phones at a discounted rate. Great thing is, you don’t need a degree from MIT in order to install this thing. All that’s needed is broadband Internet access that connects directly to the phone. The picture and video quality of the phone is said to be superb, but for those finicky users, there are adjustments that can be made on either.

Once the commercials get going in the US for the Skype videophone, it’s sure to be a best seller at every Best Buy in site. What the next step for communication technology? At home holograms.

Pros:

- Now your nagging long-distance girlfriend can finally see you and chat.

- Feeling homesick? Just turn it on and see what the family is up to. I guarantee you’ll be fine after having a long chat.

- It’s portable! Equipped with a re-chargeable battery, you can unplug and bring it to the hotel and connect to the WiFi service there.

Cons:

- Now your nagging long-distance girlfriend can finally see you and chat?

- With a price tag near $400, it may be better to stick with your Mac camera for the meantime.

- Make sure you turn it off when you’re done. You wouldn’t want grandma to get a stroke from an un-expecting act.

- The future of drunk dialing has finally arrived! This gadget’s sure to get some folks in trouble.
