The end of the summer is approaching and with only a few weeks left, it’s important to make sure you’ve taken full advantage of what Miami has to offer. The sun, sand and parties are a given, but some great exhibitions at local museums can be a creative, not to mention cooler, alternative to the typical sun and liver damage that usually takes place during the summer months. From high-tech digital portraits to LEGO masterpieces, here is a round-up of some of Miami’s must-see exhibitions of summer 2008.

VOOM Portraits
Bass Museum of Art
2121 Park Avenue
Miami Beach, 33139
305.674.5475
VOOM Portraits is probably one of the most exciting exhibitions in Miami at the moment. Each “still” portrait is really a continuous video loop that is completely high definition and is displayed on a 65-inch plasma, accompanied by sound from an HD media player. The pieces were created by renowned artist Robert Wilson in collaboration with VOOM Networks. VOOM Portraits runs through August 3 at the Bass Museum of Art.

Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll Since 1967
Museum of Contemporary Art
NE 125 Street
North Miami, 33161
305.893.6211
Calling all music lovers, Sympathy for the Devil should be on the top of your list of exhibitions to see this summer, because, well, you’d love it. The exhibition consists of paintings, album covers, music videos and other materials that are used to show the relationship between the arts and rock-and-roll culture over the years. Sympathy for the Devil runs through September 7 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami.

Shadows, Disappearances and Illusions
Miami Museum of Art
101 West Flagler Street
Miami, 33130
305.375.3000
This exhibition is a mind boggler. It consists entirely of works of art that play with light, perspective and erasure to make the mind question what is being seen by the eyes. The pieces are from several artists, including some commissioned works from Miami local artists. Shadows, Disappearances and Illusions run through September 21 at the Miami Museum of Art.

The Art of the Brick
Art and Culture Center of Hollywood
1650 Harrison Street
Hollywood, 33020
954.921.3274
Not just for the young at heart, The Art of the Brick is an exhibition full of color and texture, literally. New York Artist Nathan Sawaya created 30 works of art purely from LEGO bricks. Some one million LEGO bricks were used and even a few were created specially for the exhibition that took Sawaya from 2002-2007 to complete. The Art of the Brick is currently showing at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood through August 10.

Florida Cartoons
Historical Museum of South Florida
101 West Flagler Street
Miami, 33130
305.375.1492
Newspaper junkies this one is for you. If you’re into history more than contemporary art, you might want to check out Florida Cartoons. Cartoonist Anne Mergen was one of the first women to break into cartoon artistry and was published in Miami News depicting issues of Miami and all of Florida. Over two dozen of Mergen’s renderings from the years 1940-1950 will be on display. Florida Cartoons runs through September 4 at the Historical Museum of South Florida.
