This year the Miami Beach Convention Center hosted the Antique Jewelry Watch and Fine Silver show from October 22-24, 2004. The show was a spectacular display of diamonds, gems and keepsakes. Vendors such as Sharp Facets, Inc. Old America and Spencer and Jules, Inc. were just a few of the many exhibitors who set up shop for the three day event.
Jeffrey Eller of Sharp Facets describes, “Antique jewelry is so cool because it has some kind of history. The designs are reflective of the time in which they were made. If you look at 1920’s pieces you can see the open and airy design which marked the time. Then in the 1930’s the design gets heavier. In the 1940’s the designs get more minimal, because platinum and gold were no longer available due to the war, so the designs reflect this. Every piece of jewelry evolves within the context of time.”
One striking example of eighteenth century artistry is a 1780’s Georgian three piece set, offered by Spencer and Jules, Inc. Enamel, gold, pink topaz, aquamarine and emeralds encrust a brooch, necklace and earring set for $22,000.000.
Satinder Sood comments, “Victorian age prodigy took their parents Georgian jewelry and melted it to make it into Victorian age pieces, hence the difficulty in finding Georgian pieces today.”
“Things have begun shifting back,” comments Jeffrey Eller. “Jewelry is becoming nicer and more intricate. We’re moving back to quality.”
Another beautiful display of quality was a 45 carat diamond Van Cleef and Arpels 1930’s art deco bracelet. A sparkling feat of design, Faina Svetlov of Old America describes, “this bracelet is not for the faint of heart, its craftsmanship at its finest.”
And who could disagree, paired with a $4,500.00 pair of pearl earrings from the 1950’s, the artistry is undeniably exquisite.
“People buy what their mom wore,” says Jeffrey Eller. “So, let’s hope more and more mothers continue returning back to antiquity,” he laughingly comments.
From deco pins, Bell époque pendants, pave rings, and intricate filigree designs, the Miami Beach Antique Jewelry Watch and Fine Silver Show was a feast for the eyes. With over a hundred exhibitors displaying the finest in diamonds and gems, this event is surely not to be missed next year.
