Florida: Keep the Ban on Cruel Confinement Two measures (S.B. 1918 & H.J.D. 5) are being considered in the Florida legislature that would remove language adopted after a successful ballot initiative in 2002 to ban an inhumane method of factory farming. The voter-approved initiative halted the cruel confinement of keeping pigs in crates so small that they cannot even turn around. And the initiative prevents large-scale industrial factory farms from settling in Florida. The bills to repeal the anti-factory farming initiative undermine the will of the people of Florida who voted in 2002 to institute these protections for our state. During their four-month pregnancies, nine out of ten sows -- female pigs -- in the United States are kept in barren "gestation crates," individual metal stalls approximately two feet wide and seven feet long-enclosures so small the animals are unable even to turn around. Confined in these barren gestation crates, the pigs cannot exercise or even fully extend their limbs. They are prevented from engaging in nearly all of their natural behaviors or satisfying basic psychological needs. After giving birth to an average of five or six litters in four years, the sows are sent to slaughter. TAKE ACTION: Please call your state senator and representative and urge them to oppose S.B. 1918 and H.J.D. 5 which remove voter-approved protections for pregnant pigs from the state constitution. Not saying that if you eat bacon then you are evil. But we can make an effort to keep these animals people eat in natural conditions as much as possible. I know if I still ate bacon then I would want to know that the pig the meat came from wasn't festering in it's own waste for 4-5 years..
