The gray-haired "Soul Patrol" from Birmingham, Ala., has taken his debut single "Do I Make You Proud" to the top of the record charts. The song is the top single in the country, based on sales of more than 190,000 copies in its first week in stores. The song was performed by Hicks during the finale of the "Idol" series. The B-side of the single is Hicks' cover of the Doobie Brothers' classic "Takin' It to the Streets." Hicks said he has been working the past 10 years trying to be the best singer he can be and that he believes having his first No. 1 single "is only the beginning." Hicks beat out Los Angeles native Katharine McPhee for the "American Idol" title last month. He is the fifth winner of the hit show's crown, preceded by Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Carrie Underwood. The show has also proven to be golden for Clay Aiken, a runner-up to Studdard in season 2
