Default Scratch Academy or SAE?

A good friend of mine is really interested in learning proper DJ skills as a hobby (not as a profession). She doesn't want to invest in the money for equipment just yet until she sees how she does with some schooling. We looked into the programs at Scratch and SAE.

Scratch is $300 vs. $750 for SAE but you only do 7hrs at Scratch vs. 30hrs at SAE. Do you think the curriculum at Scratch is enough to pick up the basics?

invest the money in the gear instead of the schooling and teach yourself in your home

if you're interested in doing something like this professionally OR as a hobby, you'll get WAY more deck time if you have the gear in your own house, it isnt that expensive

with something like this its all about practice and messing around...you can be taught it, sure, but you'll learn more on your own, plus there are tons of amateurs around town to hookup with that will throw records around with you (you'll learn a shitload from watching them for free)

if you're going to go to SAE, their audio engineering program is def worth it - i wouldnt bother with 'dj schools' - you can easily teach it to yourself, its not that difficult

Nobody can learn to beatmatch in 30 hours. You MIGHT get a feel for it in 30 days.

Buy a pair of used decks and a beater mixer to learn on, if you can stick with it, then invest in something decent.

i will say though again for the record, SAE's audio engineering school is top notch, and they come highly recommended from several top guys:

for more info

as well - if you were dead set on going to school for dj'ing, they are def the right choice...

All good advice. If your friend is into the whole turntablism thing she could check out this DVD, i've heard its pretty good, and its a lot cheaper than taking a class:
