The all-volunteer military is more effective and efficient. People in generally want to be there. Conscription would dull the effectiveness of our military. You'd have kids with no choice and no desire to fight dragging down those for whom soldiering is a way of life.

Although i think it should be mandatory two year for anyone, Rangel proposed this sometime ago and it got two of two hundred fourty something votes. It can be for national service (ports, Airports etc..) not just sending people over to iraq. It would be mone well spent.

Again, I believe a volunteer operation is more effective. If you demand people do it, there's gonna be a lot of malcontents weighing down those who want to do it.
