Default Dem. Sen. Johnson Suffers Possible Stroke

Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota suffered a possible stroke Wednesday and was taken to a hospital, his office said.
If he should be unable to continue to serve, it could halt the scheduled Democratic takeover of the Senate. Democrats won a 51-49 majority in the November election. South Dakota's governor, who would appoint any temporary replacement, is a Republican.

"Senator Tim Johnson was taken to George Washington University Hospital this afternoon suffering from a possible stroke," read a statement from his Senate office. "At this stage, he is undergoing a comprehensive evaluation by the stroke team."

Johnson had become disoriented during a call with reporters, stuttering in response to a question. He appeared to recover, asking if there were any additional questions and then signing off.

If the two-term senator, 59, is unable to serve when the 110th Congress convenes Jan. 4, South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds would appoint a replacement.

South Dakota Secretary of State Chris Nelson said there are no special restrictions on such an appointment and a replacement does not have to be in the same political party.

Johnson turns 60 on Dec. 28. The centrist Democrat was elected to the Senate in 1996 and has been one of the more reserved members of the chamber, rarely taking center stage at news conferences.

He served in the House for 10 years from 1987 to 1997. His focus has been on committee assignments important to his state's interests _ Indian Affairs and Energy and Natural Resources _ as well as a spot on Appropriations. The latter allows him to direct funds to South Dakota.

Johnson has worked as a lawyer and county prosecutor and served several years in the 1970s and 1980s in the South Dakota state Legislature.

Several hours after Johnson was admitted to George Washington University Hospital, a spokeswoman for him said it had been determined the 59-year-old senator had not suffered a stroke. She provided no additional details about his condition.

If the senator had to be replaced, South Dakota law says Republican Gov. Michael Rounds would name someone to finish the final two years of his six-year term. An election for a successor would be held in November 2008.

If Rounds named a Republican, that would put the Senate at 50-50, with Vice President Dick Cheney breaking any tie and putting Republicans in charge.

More than just a coincidence IMO!! :

You know, I read what you guys posted above and thought...."yeah, whatever....call Oliver Stone". But today on "The View", they actually promoted this bullshit conspiracy theory. It's one thing for a bunch of people on a messageboard to say it, but it says alot when mainstream media people suggest it.

Voting machines, oil, strokes....everything's a fuckin' conspiracy with you people. Are you guys at all concerned about the Senator? Fuck no...you're concerned about the balance of power. If this guy ever recovered, I'd be pretty pissed off to read headlines like this one....

I totally agree with you. I personally do care more about the balance of power than this one senator.

You have to admit, it's a bit coincidental. Especially, in a state where the next in line is a Republican which will tie the number of seats & leave 'ole Dick for the swing vote.

As far as what's actually going on in the U.S. & the world, for that matter, you'll need to dig a bit deeper than the controlled media. I'm sure you're aware of the prolification of the global economy, the North American Union, the Illuminati, the Amero, & the North American superhighway. Just to touch the surface. If not, I suppose it's time for an eye opener. :-X
