Though the next-gen video format war is not yet over, it is becoming increasingly clear which way the tide of battle is turning. Today, analysts at Home Media Research (via Reuters) reported that Sony's Blu-ray Disc format is now outselling Microsoft-backed HD-DVD at a ratio of nearly 2-to-1. Between January 1 and July 1, a total of 795,000 HD-DVDs were sold, versus 1.6 million BDs. As of the end of July, 2.2 million BDs and 1.5 million HD-DVDs have sold since they both hit the market last year.

Home Media Research cited sales of the popular film 300 to illustrate the differences between the two formats. After being released on home video on July 31, the film has sold 190,000 units on Blu-ray and 97,000 units on HD-DVD. The article also referenced the fact that Blockbuster is supporting Blu-ray exclusively as a factor behind the format's increasing sales momentum.

Curiously, the article did not mention the PlayStation 3, which plays Blu-ray discs without any additional hardware. The Xbox 360 supports HD-DVD playback via a $179 peripheral.

The war wont be won until the Porn industry decides who to go with..remember they were the ones who made the difference in the last media war..

I thought Blue-ray was not going to support porn and HD-DVD is. I thought the same thing the porn industry will make the difference.

even though the format the ps3 uses is more widely accepted the 360 has a huge lead on the ps3 right now.. the 360 is the next gen system of choice at the moment

we shall see what happens in the future...

blu ray is still too pricey once i see blockbusters section of blue ray discs larger than normal dvds then its time to upgrade

Porn is going with both. Sony licensed out the production tech to some firms in Taiwan, so Blu-Ray porn is out there.

I don't know who's proprietary nature I dislike most....Apple's or Sony's?

I have products from both...

I am really turned off by Sony because of the way they do not brief employees or sales distributors about their products. If you buy a Sony camera...they make it almost impossible to buy accessories (memory,extra batteries, lenses, etc) for the product.

I remember buying my wife a pretty pricey Sony digital camera and she went to the Sony store to ask how to extract a video from the camera onto a Mac since it was not very clear in the instructions...

The clerk tells her..."you need to go to the Mac Store, it's a Mac thing" when she told me that over the phone I wanted to fly from NYC where I was at the time and walk into the store to return the piece of shit camera....

Canon will be our next camera purchase.

Toshiba, is releasing a few cheap sub $300 HD players, so it's really a question of the players and the porn industry rather than current sales. Current sales are so tiny that this race is far from over.

I think also since Sony is so huge, MS will do what it can to ruin the bluray format. Also netflix has not weighed in yet.

If those numbers are correct and if my math is correct.. it looks like HD-DVD is catching up..

1.6mil vs 795k is 2 to 1

but

1.5mil vs 2.2mil is not 2 to 1.... its more like 1.46 to 1

From what ive read... I believe the porn industry has chosen HD-DVD.

we'll see though.. this format war is FARRRRR from over.. this is merely the beginning... I smell a new xbox coming from microsoft in 3-4 years with built in hd-dvd player.. that is what is going to put blueray and sony out of commission because according to sony they plan on giving the PS3 a 10year life span.. PFFFF

If anyone got a 360 in here.. get on live and Download the new BIOSHOCK demo... holy shitballs on fire.. this game is WICKED!!
