Dangerously close to justifying genocide

Oh wow. This is a good one.

So, what's wrong with Nazis? I mean, the Nazi movement was just a really nationalistic political party with an emphasis on patriotism. It's not like the Nazi party and its politicians stated that they advocated genocide. They started off by passing laws and amendments to their own existing laws (which, by the way, the current US legal system has ample accomodations for), building up popular support by plying on ignorance and greed, and finally making provisions to keep power and popularity once they were firmly entrenched as the governing power. They believed in a stronger government, military power, improved education, more jobs, an improved economy... sounds good to me!

Wait, there's people who are preventing this from happening? There's people who like things the way they are? They must be evil, send them away!

Why is it so hard to believe that the same thing couldn't happen in the current US government, given enough manipulation? Why is it so hard to believe that such a level of manipulation and influence would be at all difficult? Was McCarthyism a myth propagated by the communists?

If "being patriotic" is all it takes to justify the loss of human life (on both sides) that is happening right now, right this very instant, then wouldn't we qualify as Nazis too?

Maybe we're in it for the oil interests. Maybe we're in it for other, more far-reaching economic interests that we may not be considering. So we're in it for greed? We're killing and being killed for greed?

Would those of you that say "I'd proudly serve my country" be proud and happy to die so that I can drive my gas-guzzling car (a trait common to American vehicles) an extra mile? Maybe you'd rather die to defend freedom... but our freedom isn't being threatened, and those people never knew freedom as we know it, so it's suddenly our job to introduce freedom to them, even if it kills them?

That's an interesting thought.

A colleague of mine made an interesting point: Americans hate it when somebody says their president is acting like Hitler, but don't seem to care when their president is acting that way. I understand un-nationalistic behaviour as being offensive. So offensive, in fact, that I think we should just kill all people who think differently!

Especially mac users. Those mac people all think differently, and they should all be categorically slain.

And dropping the second bomb was the US testing the destructive capabilities of a different configuration of atomic bomb. There's no test like a live test!

you're smart but... the fact is, you don't know what's going on behind the scenes. none of us do.

we can argue all we want but there are so many things we don't know about... clandestine things going on behind the governmental curtain that we will never know.

i think only half of stuff actually comes into light.

the u.s. sucks sometimes, i agree. but we all should feel damn lucky we live here.

I didn't really want to see this thread bumped. Not interested in any of that old personal stuff. It is interesting to go back and read this thread now after the world has seen the torture camps. Lots of people all over the world are openly comparing Bush and Hitler now.

See like I was saying back then: lots of people here were offended by me comparing Hitler and Bush. Shouldn't you have been more offended by the fact that the President of the United States of America was running around acting like Hitler? Treating people like cockroaches. Naked pyramids. Acting like that is why the world hates us. IMHO...

Prove to the world that this 'democracy' thing that Bush keeps talking about does work. Vote him out.
