turntable shop help for an amatuer

ok hardcores, whats the deal with the stylus/headshell on a straight arm turntable? should it be angled, or should the needle be straight on the arm?

i have heard that angling the cartridge (as manufacturers recommend, i.e. stanton 500s) will actually put increased wear on the record as the arm moves across when playing.

whats the real deal, anyone?

Angling does wear out the records faster but it's not by a huge amount. Straight or angled arms are just a matter of personal taste. I actually like the look of a straight tone arm on a regular record player, but i can't imagine dj'ing out somewhere and seeing a straight tone arm
