Well.......this guy hyped it up pretty good: 'Raymond' Finale Is a Comedy Classic Monday, May 24, 2004 By Adam Buckman NEW YORK — Tonight, eight seasons of "Everybody Loves Raymond" gets boiled down to 14 minutes. And the result is a scene that is destined to be a classic. It's a pretty simple scene, involving just two characters - Ray and his brother, Robert (Brad Garrett), who are seated in the front seats of Ray's minivan. They then begin a lengthy conversation that manages to crystallize everything this hugely popular comedy series has ever stood for. Naturally, it's an exchange about family, which is what "Everybody Loves Raymond" has always been about. But more than just a general discussion on that topic, the scene manages specifically to touch on every single aspect of family dynamics - including sons and mothers, mothers and daughters-in-law, sibling rivalries, middle age, old age, mortality and all the responsibilities and obligations they all entail. If comedy is truth - as so many practitioners say it is - then comedy is rarely better than this. With its unusual length and claustrophobic setting, it's a brilliant, innovative scene for a TV sitcom. But make no mistake - though Ray and Robert cover some pretty serious ground, the scene is uproariously, even dizzyingly, hilarious. It is also rich enough to be sincerely moving. Tonight's episode - airing at 9 p.m. on CBS - is the eighth- season finale for "Raymond," although it almost served as the series' finale since CBS didn't know until last week if it would have "Raymond" back for a ninth season next fall. The signing of Raymond and company came as great news for "Raymond" fans who are not yet ready to say good-bye. The question for next fall is: How will Ray and his writers find anything new to say after they've just said it all? |
