Default stem cell research illegal

The restrictions on stem cell research in Germany may leave scientists there with only one legal option for producing embryonic stem cells for research: leaving the country. For those who remain in Germany, even collaborating with international colleagues on new lines could leave them at risk of prosecution, according to government officials and legal experts.

Germany's 1991 Embryo Protection Law bans the production of human embryonic stem cells. Under a hotly debated law that took effect in 2002, scientists now can apply for licenses to import embryonic stem cells, but only from cell lines that date before January 1, 2002.

Those found to have been working on newer lines, or creating stem cell lines, are liable to prosecution. If convicted, scientists could face fines or up to 3 to 5 years in prison.

It is illogical to legislate scientific progress. Someone will always find a way around it.

Clones, stem cell treatments, genetically engineered humans, artificial body parts that are designed to be better than the original, all the stuff of the movies and sci-fi, it is going to happen sooner or later. I suggest everyone smile and deal with it. Hell, I'm first in line for when I can get a Wi-Fi chipset installed in my brain.

well, steam cells are the future, and germany will be left out in the cold of all the $$$$... When us companies start to crack the mystery of them, they will change their tune.

Already they are close to clone human hair, thus if you are bald, you can get a full head of hair and never run out of donor hair. The market for that is huggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggge!!!

Fear not. There are plenty of places in the world where stem cell research is going strong. By the time you guys need hair cloning or a replacement heart, you might be able to travel to China for the procedure.

We should all be grateful to the fundamentalist Christian in office in the US for the heavy restrictions here on stem cell research. I mean really, the biotech sector is just snake oil anyway right? Replacement hearts and lungs and kidneys won't have any kind of lasting effect on the overall economy once they are feasible anyway right? Let the Chinese put all of their effort into biotech, we don't need it. Waste of time.

i hated how in his interview with larry king, him and laura were trying to say how they didn't disapprove of the research, only that they felt no benefits would come out of it any time soon. it's so obvious that he has an ideological beef with the research.

Bush himself doesn't set foot in a church unless somebody with a camera is watching and he probably didn't know a stem cell from an eggplant before he ran for president. He is pushing an extreme right ideology because the neoconservatives who run his organization think that it's his best chance to get reelected.

So which is worse, a radical religious zealot or an ideological whore for hire? I have even less respect for the idiot in the front row blindly nodding as the evangelical preacher yells "hallelujah!" than I do for the misguided authoritarian preacher himself. Our president is either that idiot or a person coldly calculating the manipulation of people based on their religious beliefs in order to stay in power. Not sure which is worse really.
