Whats a good excuse for not going to graduate school....

Mine are :

I don't want to spend 125,000

I need to save up enough$ to buy a home

I need to keep building up my retirement fund (vs not being able to when a full time student)

There is more to life than formal education

My excuse:
I'm trying to focus on another part of my life that needs more attention at this time and school is taking that needed attention. When asked which part you say I'll let you know when I have focused in on it.

I'll give you the best reason of all-

You shouldnt spend a time on further education. It wont get you anywhere salary wise even though it's supposed to , only experience will. Your best bet is to focus on a job/career at a good company and have them pay for further schooling.

Formal education is BS these days, its who you know and how much you know...which only a minimal portion comes from school.
Nobody has EVER checked where i went to school or how i did...its a crock of poop lol..

exactly. depending on your trade, one can predict how beneficial grad school would be. if you wanted a degree in Ary History, I'd say go to grad school. if you wanted a degree in film, I'd say to just learn it on the fly in the industry and network a ton.

Do what you need to do and what feels right at this moment. If there's some part of your life you think that you need to focus on right now then do so. Otherwise you may regret it in the end. As far as only needing experience over a college education/degree is a wrong assesment depending on what field of work you go into. Take my case for instance. I have a shit load of work experience, from managment to owning my own business, etc...I also have spent about 5 years total of my life in college but I only have a 2 year associate degree to show for it. I never finished my Bachelors degree because I decided to do something else with my life during my senior year in college.

Bottom line is there are a lot of jobs out there that I can do and better than most people (just out of college because of my work experience) I believe but unfortunaletly a lot of them require that you have a Bachelors degree to even be considered for an interview. Thus I'm now 32 years old. I did the 'school thing', I did the 'work your ass off thing', I've done the 'live your life as an artist thing' (which was the most fulfilling for myself). But now I need to make more money now that I have a family and I'm thinking of going back to school for a year or 2 so that I'm not struggling while I'm in my late 30s and going into retirement.

Another example is my girl has a ton of education. She has 2 degrees from Duke University, she makes a good salary and has had a ton of work experience but she's thinking of going back to school for some more training to get the certifaction she needs to get to the next level in her career...

Bottom line is now a days you have to do what's right for you at the time in your life and the time in your career. But take care of what's most important to you now. If there's anything that you can learn from my speech here is that school will always be there for you when you need it....

a higher education despite not giving the returns that we might expect is always good. but reasons not to go

$125K?? Holy shit that's alot more then the places I've been shopping, but I guess I'm probably gonna get what I pay for. My New Year's Resolution is to begin an MBA program in 2005. The only reason I'm going to an MBA is so that I can be one step closer to the PhD, which is my ultimate goal. I want out of the banking business and into the university business before I'm 40 soooo......wait, you wanted reasons not to do it....hmm....the parties aren't the same???

I think I read somewhere that the average income between someone with a 4 year degree and a graduate degree is minimal, especially when compared to the difference between someone with a high school diploma and a 2 year degree (huge difference!!) The return on investment is not necessarily there, but sometimes you can't look at it that way.
