Thursday 16 December 2004 Australian Soccer Association Chairman Mr Frank Lowy today announced the organisation would be changing its name to Football Federation Australia effective 1 January 2005. A new logo was also unveiled incorporating the Southern Cross and the organisation's corporate colours of blue and gold. "2005 will be one of the most crucial in the history of Football in Australia and we will start it off with this symbolic move," said Mr Lowy. "The change in our corporate name is another part of the ongoing process of repositioning the game in Australia." "It is another small but important step on the journey away from ‘old soccer’ and into ‘new football’." Mr Lowy confirmed that the organisation does not pretend that all Australians will take to calling the game football immediately and confirmed that the name "Socceroos" would not be discarded but may eventually fade out. "We feel that it is important to make this symbolic change, and to bring the “World Game” in Australia into line with the rest of the Football World." "We are one of the few countries that calls its national team by a nickname." "It has been commonly used and is a much loved name but we may see it fade out as evolution takes place." In an open letter to stakeholders of the sport detailing the name change, Mr Lowy said 2004 had been about putting the building blocks in place for a successful future. "It has been an intense period, getting the ASA’s house in order from an organisational perspective, and laying important foundations - not just for a vitally important 2005, but also for a stable and sustainable future for the game." "We set about ensuring we get quality people on board, perform modern and effective governance, achieve on-field results, construct a new national competition and drive more value into the grass roots of the game." "With these building blocks in place we now need to work even harder to ensure that no opportunities are lost." ![]()
