and good riddance to liberal rubbish....the funny thing was, they tried to make it seem as if he was "going out on top". This guy was #3 in his time slot (in a three man race no less) for years and he's been shamed for pushing the recent fabricated stories about Bush on CBS. This is why network news has been in the toilet in recent years....guys like this.

Whatever.

Rather was a great reporter. So what if he had liberal bias? Don't listen to him if you don't like what he's reporting. I'm sure if he was conservative, Shaun, you wouldn't mind him being biased....and would probably be up at the CBS studios protesting right now.

there should be no room for people who fabricate stories in our media.

I don't mind the bias. Guys like Chris Matthews, Al Franken, Alan Colmes, etc. have a liberal bias but at least own up to it so you know what you're getting. Dan Rather has been trying to put on this front for years that he is an OBJECTIVE journalist, but you yourself, even admit he's liberal in his reporting.

Tim Russert and Brian Williams are both reportedly liberals, however, you'd never know it watching either of their broadcasts. That is what objective journalism is all about. It is interesting that Rather was the most liberal of the three networks' anchors and was dead last for years in the ratings. Looks like it wasn't just me who didn't listen to him.

you can talk all you want about Rather ( i think he was a fine reporter especially when he talked to Sadam Hussein ) but you're not going to have the nerve to tell me that Bill OReilly has no "conservative" and antagonistic journalistic tactics on his program?

please. thats why i quit entering debacles in here, conservatives never want to listen to the other side, they are just like born again Christians, they repeat their own right wing mantra over and over ....

Comparing the O'Reilly Factor to CBS Nightly News is like comparing the Today Show to Rush Limbaugh. Two different journalistic styles. O'Reilly doesn't position his show as "objective journalism" like CBS Nightly News tries to claim. O'Reilly is an opinion show. I thought you knew the difference.

Now, if they hired O'Reilly for CBS Nightly News, I'd have a problem with that too. You see, "the cattle" know O'Reilly is giving his opinion on his show and are properly prepared to agree or disagree. However, people that watch CBS/NBC/ABC think they are getting objective reporting. With the exception of NBC, they really aren't. Bottom line....Rather retired way before he wanted to, his ratings sucked for years, and he finally got what he had coming. Freedom of the Press doesn't mean fabricating stories to make news.

I agree. O'Reilly is a commentator and there's a difference between commentators and journalists.

I am very liberal (although I work for a very conservative organization - go figure) but no matter what, I always listen to the views of conservatives and liberals (love Glenn Beck and Schnitt on News Radio 610)

However, most of the media is liberal (with the exception of some of the news channels like Fox) and most of the commenators are conservative -- so I think it kind of evens out. So what if Dan was liberal? What he says is equaled out by the crap that spews out of Rush Limbaugh and Hannity's mouths.

Correct, although the order of events is not. Limbaugh, Hannity, and the rest of the right-wingers came in long after CBS, PBS, NBC, ABC, and CNN, so it was they who provided the balance. It's hard to believe now, but there was a time when the media was ENTIRELY liberal and had no conservative points of view whatsoever. These were dark times for conservatives. Imagine if the only people on TV reporting the news were Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, Pat Robertson, Dennis Miller, etc.....that's the way conservatives felt for 40 years.

I feel sorry for you.

If all I had to listen to was Hannity, O'Reilly and Rush, I would shoot myself.

Although I don't think the past 40 years had the degree of intensity as you say. The NYT and other sources are aren't as forthright with their views as the commentators. They're a little more subtle!

The worst is Ann Coulter. My work had a fundraising dinner not too long ago and she was the guest speaker. ARG!!! People walked out...and I was seriously considering assassination. She's way too over the top and nasty. She really does give conservatives a bad name.
