In miami the doorman def think their's gods gift. I was shocked 2 see how much much more professional the staff is nyc.. I think the mentality of assholes is the opium group fault though. There the one's w/ the attitude if we dont kno u, or if u dont have the right connections ur not getting in. They have the best and most exclusive clubs so they can get away w/ it. The problem is when other rinky dinky clubs try 2 be like them. Lucki 4 me i worked w/ a few of these frenchies so i got cool w/ them. But it seems like thats the company's mentality be rude 2 every1 u dont kno... (its like reverse psychology-treat them like shit and they will return) But in the end it hurts more then helps.. Look at suite/snatch when the 1st opened their door, The door staff couldn't care less who u were unless u had $100 for them. Or buying 3 bottles. But look at them now.. I kno as a local i wouldn't support them now. Now that there no longer the "it" spot suddenly im getting emails and invites 2 attend their parties. FUck u, i say!!
And you are soo right, I used to work at the Club USA...way back in 92, after that at the infamous TUNNEL as well Twilo...last Summer I return after 8 years absence...and worked at Cielo and the Greenroom as well as Flute Gramercy Park...and yes they are more professional, and kind! Of course we need a little attitude at the door But positive!!! And Professional
This is all about! We entertaine people, so why have this agressive attitude...

Maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding of the history of Miami Beach is that it was a wasteland up until the preservationists moved in, then the artsy people, then the exclusive clubs. As far back as I can remember, not being from here, it has *always* been advertised as a place of tough doors. That was the original allure of it. People came here *because* of the exclusivity, not in spite of it. Personally, I think the doors have gotten more relaxed, if anything.

The artsy people moved in, then the preservationists. Kinda reversed.

Then the developers came and gentrified and "normalized" the area. Grant it, there's still a few original people left, but when every day, there's more and more WASPs and less of a diversity of people, there's a problem.

I don't mind the preservation, as a matter of fact, I wish they were a little more strict about it. While buildings like the Setai and so forth are nice, they don't fit. Or they will when the last historic Art Deco building meets the wrecking ball and we're left with concrete and glass stylings no different than New York.

Coach, don't get me started. ;D

whats wrong w/ the setai???

hmm 2 be honest i think the architecture of the setai is by far the most beautiful on the beach. Only place where i dont mind spending $20 for a Martini-(granted it's a sipping drink).. (CLASSY JOINT).. Imho it's the only miami building that could land in the middle of nyc w/ no problem... It looks beautiful in back drops in posters movies... Grant it, i dont want this 2 be the norm on the beach.. THey should & will preserve the art deco buildings..

It's a great looking place but it sticks out from the surrounding architecture.

They built it with the unfortunately correct assumption that the Beach is gonna resemble Mizner Park soon. Welcome, white man. We'll leave the keys under the mat.

pod you're right, Miami-Beach has definitely developped to a almost totally corporate oriented mostly Wasps crowd...which definitely want to catch a piece of it, and definitely they don't really preserve the Beach...
To Coach, maan you see I did once an editorial for G.Jack Donohue ( former host of Livingroom) and we talked about how SoBe supposed to be Disney Land, and that the island was not capabale to withstand the weight of the structures, so they moved to Orlando...also it was a retirement place for
1 Jewish folks escapeing Holocaust
2 Retired place for Army Veteran
and only when finally a think an Norvegian or Swedish developper finally proved that this could be a place to exploit!
So in that sense Miami-Beach had diverse influences before it totally blumed with the a Photographer Bruno Weber which has givien more recently the Miami new look and evolution...
Of course the Hippies came and made Miami a perfect hangout
but soon also this was gone and some Invester saw Miami-Beach as a Jewel to exploit Luxerious living and so far...the rest we all have seen it!
So coming back to the buildings and all yes I studied architecture back in Europe, and what I've seen there is that they're strict with perserving the historic Buildings and all and which as you said Pod Setai, Portofino Towers as well the Continium are somewhat queer in the landscape of Miami-Beach...it feels no more that its Artdeco at all...and I mean I don't say that the building are uggly, but they don't fit the envirement...

Exactly. Taken alone, the Setai, Continuum, etc, are all great buildings, but they stick out around here at the moment. The Beach needs to make a decision on whether they want to preserve the classic symbols of MiMo and Art Deco, or trash it all and throw up another glass-and-concrete area.

I like glass and concrete, but my feeling is, that Brickell has that down pat already.

Yeah you're right about that...
Who knows in 5 years maybe we will have forgotten how Miami-Beach was and it will the same, when I arrived in Miami-Beach from NYC, I remember the Indian Statue by the Southpoint...it has been removed to give place to the driveway of Portofino Towers... :-[
