Maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding of the history of Miami Beach is that it was a wasteland up until the preservationists moved in, then the artsy people, then the exclusive clubs. As far back as I can remember, not being from here, it has *always* been advertised as a place of tough doors. That was the original allure of it. People came here *because* of the exclusivity, not in spite of it. Personally, I think the doors have gotten more relaxed, if anything.

whats wrong w/ the setai??? hmm 2 be honest i think the architecture of the setai is by far the most beautiful on the beach. Only place where i dont mind spending $20 for a Martini-(granted it's a sipping drink).. (CLASSY JOINT).. Imho it's the only miami building that could land in the middle of nyc w/ no problem... It looks beautiful in back drops in posters movies... Grant it, i dont want this 2 be the norm on the beach.. THey should & will preserve the art deco buildings..

It's a great looking place but it sticks out from the surrounding architecture. They built it with the unfortunately correct assumption that the Beach is gonna resemble Mizner Park soon. Welcome, white man. We'll leave the keys under the mat.

pod you're right, Miami-Beach has definitely developped to a almost totally corporate oriented mostly Wasps crowd...which definitely want to catch a piece of it, and definitely they don't really preserve the Beach... To Coach, maan you see I did once an editorial for G.Jack Donohue ( former host of Livingroom) and we talked about how SoBe supposed to be Disney Land, and that the island was not capabale to withstand the weight of the structures, so they moved to Orlando...also it was a retirement place for 1 Jewish folks escapeing Holocaust 2 Retired place for Army Veteran and only when finally a think an Norvegian or Swedish developper finally proved that this could be a place to exploit! So in that sense Miami-Beach had diverse influences before it totally blumed with the a Photographer Bruno Weber which has givien more recently the Miami new look and evolution... Of course the Hippies came and made Miami a perfect hangout but soon also this was gone and some Invester saw Miami-Beach as a Jewel to exploit Luxerious living and so far...the rest we all have seen it! So coming back to the buildings and all yes I studied architecture back in Europe, and what I've seen there is that they're strict with perserving the historic Buildings and all and which as you said Pod Setai, Portofino Towers as well the Continium are somewhat queer in the landscape of Miami-Beach...it feels no more that its Artdeco at all...and I mean I don't say that the building are uggly, but they don't fit the envirement...

Exactly. Taken alone, the Setai, Continuum, etc, are all great buildings, but they stick out around here at the moment. The Beach needs to make a decision on whether they want to preserve the classic symbols of MiMo and Art Deco, or trash it all and throw up another glass-and-concrete area. I like glass and concrete, but my feeling is, that Brickell has that down pat already.

Yeah you're right about that... Who knows in 5 years maybe we will have forgotten how Miami-Beach was and it will the same, when I arrived in Miami-Beach from NYC, I remember the Indian Statue by the Southpoint...it has been removed to give place to the driveway of Portofino Towers... :-[
