| Yeah, but I think it’s a very different way of mixing if you compare Troy Pierce and what I do. Because he's really like on one level and it's only changing the textures. I think it's very well done. But for me, maybe I need some more chords or something in there, or more music. Because its only beats for four hours. "Wow, this is a really cool beat, but can you give me a break, man?" You can’t dance no more. Yeah, man. And this is drug-related music too I think. That is another development which is really interesting. This whole minimal thing is completely based on heavy drug abuse. You can't really listen to a six hours of nothing happening in a minimal set. Maybe, that’s because I don’t do drugs so much. Maybe that’s why I'm a bit old school. It's just about music. Harmonies and chords and rhythms. It's not about being completely high and fucked. Complete interview: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature-read.aspx?id=826 Discuss... |

| I figured you would comment since i've heard you remark many a time that you do not like minimal and you think it is ruining techno. As a techno newbie, I have been exposed to both forms at the same time (all w/in the last year). The being said I have an affinity for both although I don't like the really banging techno stuff, I feel like lacks musicality. Which is funny cuz that what is said about minimal but i love getting lost in the deep minimal sounds, which often feature some kiler basslines. I remember hearing Jeff Mills spin at the DEMF closing and thinking what crap that was. It was alll this banged out techno that had no peaks or ever let up and sounded like one complete tranwreck. Just constant thumpin' with no musicality. I dont know if he is representative of all "hard" techno but it did notice in Detroit that my tastes venture more towards the deeper techno, minimal techno, and tech house.

very good interview imo.... i always talk about and am intrigued by "texture" in a set...i think its what gives a tech set that feel as though something else is working on our ears aside from the bassline and melody.... we all love the bassline....and house-to-tech music converts like me always enjoy tech with melody....we want to get lost in the melody meanwhile keeping focused on the bassline... i think the thing that always impresses me while listening to a set is that texture...most house definitely lacks texture unless its more tech-house.... but tech seems to have a lot...and when programmed well... it seems that the texture carries me to the next track not the bassline or melody with techno...and it keeps me listening for more obscure sounds, as though it takes a better listener and a better ear to really enjoy tech as it should be....(hence why K seems to be so popular, to which he alludes to in reference to minimal being drug music) i maybe not making a bit of sense here...as its hard to convey how music sounds....but after reading this i found that Efdemin stated some of the same things that i think of when out partying |
