The ladies at GenArt produce some of the most culturally significant events in Miami, marrying the trendy-chic with the underground in music, fashion and art. A non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of up and coming artists, designers and musicians, you have these girls to thank for events like Fresh Faces, Shop Miami and probably your favorite Art Basel shows.
All cultural kudos aside, Ms. Glass and her co-conspirators have created something of a social profile for themselves, networking with the best in the nightlife industry. You've probably caught them on your party circuit and think you've got them figured out, but we're willing to wager there are a few things about Monica Glass you'd never see coming.
Name: Monica Glass
Age: Do I have to tell you? (laughs) 30, forever. My 31st birthday was called "30-Redux". It's just gonna be Redux every year.
Occupation: Regional Director of GenArt Miami.
Where do you come from? I was born in Texas and raised in Germany and Honduras. I was an Army brat, but for the most part I've lived in Florida.
What's your favorite place in Miami? I knew you were going to ask me all these questions I wasn't going to be ready for. Favorite is such a loaded word! But, I really love the beach, I guess I'm happiest walking around Lincoln Road.
What do you wish Miami had more of? Live music acts.
Less of? Silicone.
Where do you run away to? Miramar (laughs). If I really want to get away from the scene that's where I go.
What's your favorite party or night in Miami? Poplife.
What party do you miss? I miss Aquabooty at Rain. I will always miss Aquabooty at Rain, it was just the best era for good House music and a good House music party. They still do their party but that was a very special era - it was in the Groovejet space and it just has a lot of history.
What is musically exciting to you right now? I go through so many things. Right now, even though they're an old band, I can't believe I haven't heard of them before - this German group Can. They've been around for a while but, they're new to me.
Who do you love to work with? Other than my staff here that I love - Andrea (Aberegg) and Cristina (Menendez) - I love to partner with Carmel (Ophir), Aramis (Lorie) and Stacey Glassman of the New World Symphony. I'm looking forward to partnering with Jake (Jefferson) of Money $hot, Rhythm Foundation - I've seriously worked with everyone and it's always a pleasure because they are both colleagues and friends.
Name a goal of yours you've achieved recently. Director for GenArt Miami? (laughs) I've been in this specific role for a year producing the events and selling sponsorships.
What is your best figure skating trick? My claim to fame is my sit-spin. Do you know which one that is? It goes like this (demonstrates sit-spin). It's the spin that you see figure skaters do when they get really low to the ground and they do the spinning. My sit-spin was the lowest.
Did you enjoy your time as a DJ? I feel like it made me who I am.
Where did you DJ? It was when the Womb first opened up, which at the time was on an FM frequency, it was 107.1 and then they had thewomb.com which is still around. It had just started, it was a pirate radio station. We had an antenna on top of the Miami Subs right here on Washington Avenue and it was just a really exciting time. I met so many interesting people. I got the job because I was already interested in electronic music but then obviously when I had a medium to exercise it through I started buying even more CDs. I was really into all kinds of electronic music like Ambient, Drum and Bass, I ran the gamut.
What song brings you back to that time? I'd have to say Cold Cut "Autumn Leaves" was one of my favorites at the time. Since I was on early in the morning I'd always start my set with something like that. If I hear that song it really transports me back to that time. Also Everything But the Girl "Walking Wounded" because I think I dedicated it to every boy I dated during that era.
What's on the horizon for Monica Glass? I am very excited because I used to do a weekly party called FUNK SHUI that was a really cool mix of Jam band, Spoken word, kind of that beat poet vibe. I'm going to do it again. It used to be a weekly about five years ago, but I'm going to have a one-off some time this summer.
