Every now and then we stumble upon a band that seems like it’s a ticking time bomb, exploding onto the music scene in any random minute. A few weeks ago, while surfing the ever-magical World Wide Web, we ran across a quartet hailing from Austin, Texas that produced an appealing timeless yet raw sound.
Starting up as a duet between singer/guitarist Ryan Sambol and drummer Matt Hammer in 2003, the pair later picked up bassist Philip Sambol and guitarist/pianist Greg Enlow. After producing a few EP’s, The Strange Boys are now set to release their first LP, The Strange Boys and Girls Club.
CoolJunkie recently caught up with Ryan Sambol who took a couple of minutes out of the band’s busy schedule and answered a few questions about the band and they’re upcoming ventures.

CoolJunkie: You guys are all from different part of the US. How’d you get together?
Ryan Sambol: Philip and I are brothers. Matt and I met in grade school in Dallas and we met Greg in Austin at a recording session.
CJ: Where do most of your musical influences come from?
Ryan Sambol: America
CJ: You guys are named ‘The Strange Boys’ yet nothing seems so strange yet. How’d the name come about?
Ryan Sambol: I don't know, maybe it's more about thoughts or decisions rather than appearance and sound. "Strange thoughts you young people have."
CJ: As an up and coming band that just beginning to create a wave of buzz, are you guys intimidated by the expectations of the music world today?
Ryan Sambol: No we're not. We just play and record, it's other people's jobs to make a big deal about it.
CJ: What are some bands out there that you guys admire at the moment?
Ryan Sambol: Reigning sound, King Kahn and BBQ, Jay Reatard, The Barbaras, Thee Oh Sees, Black Lips, Darker My Love, Nodzzz, Psychedelic Horseshit.
CJ: We recently interviewed White Denim, who also come out of Austin, TX. They mentioned that the scene there is a bit odd outside of SXSW. What’s your take on this having played the event?
Ryan Sambol: I don't know what they mean by that, but maybe it's just that there isn't a certain sound. All the bands no matter what they sound like play shows together.
CJ: A lot of artists seem to create a little buzz in the States, only to head to the UK and reach major stardom. Do you think this will be the case for yourselves as well?
Ryan Sambol: There's no way to tell.
CJ: Where would you say you primarily draw inspiration from when it comes to the songwriting?
Ryan Sambol: Human beings.
CJ: Outside of Austin, where have you guys gotten the best response?
Ryan Sambol: Baton Rouge, San Francisco, Ashville, LA, Chicago, New York and Atlanta.
CJ: What’s in the works for 09’?
Ryan Sambol: Our first LP, The Strange Boys And Girls Club, out on In The Red Records Feb. 3rd. Then it’s just American and European tours after the release.
