April 24, 2008 5:56 PM
by Marcos Colón [email]

With names like Roger Waters, Prince and Portishead blared across the top of the lineup flyer for Coachella, there's no question as to where the eyes float to first. However, it's the names in the smaller font that should be getting some more love. Names that may not get the most appeal today, but may be top tier headliners tomorrow.

Since the Junkies will be up to their necks in music at Coachella this weekend, we've compiled a list of the top 5 up and comers that no one should miss. Let it be known here, these bands will be making an impact!

The Plastiscines

Picture this: Four really, really good looking girls from Paris. Nice, huh? Now picture this: Four really, really good looking girls from Paris that can supply a heavy dose of raw, dancy garage rock. It doesn't get better than that. This Parisian quartet may get most of their attention because of their looks, but it's the sound that the ladies produce that's most impressive. They'll have most of the boys coming over to their stage for their performance, but their music we'll make them fans after they leave the stage.

Professor Murder

There's nothing better than having a dance-punk quartet jam at a festival. Endless mixes of synthesizers and percussion-based compositions send rhythmic waves into the crowd that keep them on their toes, dancing the day away. This is exactly what fans at Coachella will get from NYC boys Professor Murder. This band is sure to have an unforgettable set at Coachella for fans of The Rapture, The Faint and any New Wave from the 70s and 80s.

Manchester Orchestra

The majority of Coachella visitors wouldn't of guessed that one of the best up and coming indie rock acts hailed from the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. This Southern quintet offers one of the best voices in Andy Hull's strikingly smooth vocals, accompanied by his songwriting that draws lyrical comparisons to Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner. The band has an impressive résumé when it comes to the festival circuit, playing shows like South by Southwest, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. But there performance at Coachella may be there springboard.

Black Kids

After paying there dues by opening up for well-known indie rocks acts coming through Jacksonville, Florida, Black Kids have finally built up the hype that's taken them over seas, and now will aim their focus on the States. It's the attention and respect that they've gained after playing festivals like Athens, Popfest and CMJ Music Marathon in NYC that have had the wave of their reputation and hype increase. After their performance at Coachella this year, it's almost certain that the sky's the limit for the Florida natives.

The Teenagers

Right when you thought that the wave of "The" bands was over, The Teenagers wisp in with a unique and raw sound that compliments their emotional jab of lyrics. With a chorus like [I fucked my American cunt] on their debut album Reality Check, this dance-punk quartet hailing from both London and Paris will be getting everyone's attention in 08' with their constant supply of electronic beats, synth and French-accented vocals.
