MIAMI -- The MTV Video Music Awards vowed to 'party in the city where the heat is on' and Miami nightlife culture responded in force. Miami dance music and television pop music shared the stage on Saturday at the enormous 25,000 square foot night club Space, where the climax of the night was the Final of the CoolJunkie 2004 DJ Spin Off, an annual amateur DJ competition.
The American Idol of the dance music scene, the competition thrusts bedroom DJ's into the spotlight at world-famous night clubs like Crobar in South Beach and Space in Downtown Miami. Three amateurs remained Saturday as the competition moved from the 3 heats at celebrity hotspot VIP room at Crobar to the final in front of an intimidating crowd at Space.
The three finalists Scott Nelsen, Rocky Castro and DJ RC played in front of a crowd of over 1000 electronic music lovers and were judged by a panel of South Beach music industry professionals who included DJ's Oscar G, Cedric Gervias and Michael Louis, No Cover TV host David Orth, music journalist Mike Hamersly and CoolJunkie owners Nick McCabe & Sarah Dawson.
It was an extremely tight competition as Rocky Castro claimed first place, spinning a blistering set of house music which started off in style with the Eric Prydz remix of 'In&Out'.
Rocky says:
'I couldn't be happier about winning. This year's Spin Off was very competitive and harder than I ever could have anticipated. It means a lot to have been given a chance in such a competitive industry by such a respected name as CoolJunkie.com.'
Rocky is a South Beach native who is a fitness director and gym addict by day. He is married with a baby on the way.
